Designing for Gen Y at School: Give Me Your Wishlist
12/1/2008
I'm going to be moderating a panel of architects who specialize in designing the next generation of spaces for university students. Please weigh in with your wishlist, as well as any complaints or thoughts about the current state of your school spaces. Some topics to consider:
- Technology
- Dorms/Housing
- Safety
- Food
- Fun
- Fitness
- Athletics
- Performing Arts
- Religion/Spirituality
- Classrooms
- Study spaces
I realize it doesn't even make sense to break these out into separate categories, because Gen Y likes its spaces to be blended, so thoughts on blending are also welcome, and feel free to make up your own categories. Also, no details are too small or trivial. Be as picky as you like.
Please pass this around -- the more input, the merrier.

24 hours a day! College students are obviously on much different sleep schedules, so 24-hour gyms would be excellent. Staffing costs could be pretty minimal too (what, they have 6 students working there at $10/hr for 11 extra hours a day, for 9 months, 22 weekdays/month, that's $130,680/year, a drop in the university's budget bucket). I think I don't only speak for myself in saying that 24-hour-fitness > fitness on-site in dorms, plus it's no-doubt cheaper given high equipment costs. I know I'd give up some other common perks of universities for this.
I had a 24/7 gym membership in high school and it spoiled me rotten. It really is a great way to invigorate oneself for some extra late-night studying.
